N2 - The energy code for office buildings (Israel Standard 5282 [SI5282]) has five levels of certification for buildings, which are E (the lowest), D, C, B, and A (the highest). These five modular improvements (which involved changing the thermal conductivity and the mass of external walls, the type of glass, and the glazed area, as well as the use of shading) were modeled for each of the five levels of certification. The ReCiPe life-cycle impact assessment method was used to evaluate the life cycle assessment (LCA) differences among the different levels of building certification. Both the natural gas and photovoltaic (PV) energy production for supplying the operational energy needs of buildings were studied. It was found that the five levels of building certification exhibit no LCA differences when natural gas is used, whereas level C is the best choice when PV energy is used.
