תקציר

It has been proven experimentally and theoretically that an extruder is a good conveyor of solids, as long as the friction of the solids on the screw surface is not excessively greater than the friction of the solids on the barrel surface. This was known from early screw extruder history, but was put in a much more clearly-understood model by Tadmor and Klein. The helical geometry of the screw results in a ″plug of solids″ moving down the channel, due both to an axial translation and rigid rotation. In addition, the frictional force that the barrel exerts on the solids plug is composed of axial and tangential components. In the reported experiments, Douglas Fir sawdust as well as Ponderosa Pine sawdust sherries were used to study the transportation effectiveness of extruders. Effect of various process variables on extruder performance was determined. Extensive experimental data are plotted and evaluated. It is demonstrated that rheological properties due to the physical and chemical characteristics of the solids are important factors.
