CONTINUOUS PHASE MODULATION - DISCRIMINATOR DETECTION.

The use of partial response pulses for frequency modulation is discussed. These pulses are chosen for their narrowband properties and for their suitability for discriminator detection followed by an MLSE detector similar to that used by K. S. Chung (1984). The simulation results indicate that it is possible to achieve good detectability performance (similar to that of GTFM) with narrower bandwidth signals. The authors describe the basic transmitter-receiver model for the general case of CPM (or continuous phase digital FM schemes) using a discriminator followed by an MLSE for bit detection. Detectability and spectral results for a group of partial response baseband modulating pulses are then presented.
