N2 - The traditional value of the capacity of analog voiceband telephone channels is in the range of 25 to 30 kbps. Now, however, almost all of the public telephone network is digital, voiceband signals being compounded and transmitted digitally through the network at 64 kbps. By utilizing the knowledge that digital transmission is present, it is shown in this paper that it is theoretically possible to transmit data end-to-end at the rates much higher than those presently being used. For example, if we assume a 3.5 kHz voice bandwidth, 56 kbps transmission is theoretically possible. The transmitted signals can be constructed using simple signal shaping, but the receiver requires a Viterbi detector with a large number of states.
