Abstract

Application of the Cassie-Baxter equation to the calculation of apparent contact angles is discussed. It is demonstrated that taking into account the precursor film surrounding the drop justifies the application of the Cassie-Baxter equation. Consideration of the precursor film is important for design of self-cleaning superhydrophobic surfaces.
