Abstract
Arthroscopy has become an important diagnostic aid in injuries of the knee joint. Lately it is being used in acute injuries as well, in spite of relative technical difficulties. In these acute injuries it enables the surgeon to estimate the degree of injury and to plan a direct operative approach instead of the usual wide arthrotomy. Four patients are presented, in three of whom arthroscopy was done soon after injury with good operative results, while in the fourth arthroscopy was postponed and the patient is awaiting major reconstructive ligamentous surgery. Arthroscopy is recommended in all cases of suspected acute ligamentous injury to the knee.
