Abstract

Forty four subjects aged 17-19 yr were timed in a kilometer run and were given the Astrand and Ryhming submaximal bicycle ergometer test that included 3 loads. Maximal oxygen consumption was predicted for each subject from average heart rate values of the 3 loads. Mean running time was 4.15 min, the predicted mean Max VO2 was 44.27 ml/kg/min, and the correlation coefficient between them was r = -o.34. It was concluded that a kilometer run cannot predict Max VO2 in inexperienced subjects.
