Abstract

This short review discusses recent mechanistic studies concerning the reactions of alkyl radicals with surfaces of metals and semiconductors suspended in aqueous solutions. The results point out that these reactions are fast and involve the formations of transients with -bonds between the radical and the surface. The mechanism of decomposition of the transients thus formed depends on the nature of the surface; the radical; the solvent etc. In reaction with nano-particles supported on semiconductors or on insulators the nature of the support affects dramatically the mechanism of decomposition of these transients. These processes have to be considered in catalytic, electro-chemical, photo-chemical and environmental processes.
