Physical activity for individuals with Down syndrome: A review with clinical implications

Abstract

Persons with Down syndrome (DS) are at risk of a multitude of primary medical conditions. This group has also been constantly found to lead a sedentary life style resulting in secondary diseases such as heart and vascular diseases. This review presents findings regarding physical status of individuals with DS, as well as guidelines for effective interventions intended at improving the physical fitness and general health for this population. The article also presents a high intensity activity program, which has been running for 10 years without any dropouts for 7 individuals with DS.
