title = "Pharmacokinetics of inhaled salbutamol in patients with cystic fibrosis versus healthy young adults",
abstract = "We studied the disposition of inhaled salbutamol in adolescents with cysticfibrosis (CF) and compared it with the pharmacokinetics of the drug given by the intravenous and inhaled routes in healthy adults. After inhalation of salbutamol, CF patients had a significantly larger area under the concentration-time curve derived from amounts of drug in the systemic circulation. The differences in serum concentration of salbutamol were not reflected, in differences in change of heart rate. We conclude that the rate and extent of pulmonary absorption of inhaled salbutamol in patients with CF differ from those in healthy adults.",

note = "Funding Information: The use of an inhaled/32-agonist, such as salbutamol, is now the first-line treatment for a variety of lung diseases associated with airflow obstruction. Being a selective /32-adrenergic agonist, salbutamol relaxes the bronchiolar smooth muscle with a relatively low stimulatory effect on the heart, in comparison with older sympathomimetic drugs such as isoproterenoM After inhalatiofi, significant bronchodilatation takes place within 5 minutes and is sustained for 3 to 4 hours. 2 In the absence of simple, sensitive, specific assays for salbutamol determination in body fluids, the pharmacokinetics of inhaled salbutamol has not been studied extensively. No data exist on the disposition of the drug in patients with cystic fibrosis, although long-term maintenance therapy with salbutamol is commonly practiced in Supported in part by the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (Dr. Vaisman) and the Ontario Ministry of Health (Dr. Korea).
