Petrographic analysis of Middle Bronze Age pottery from the 2009 season

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapterpeer-review

Abstract

This is a first petrographic study of 35 Middle Bronze Age vessels from the new excavations at Tel Kabri. The methodology of the thin-section petrographic analysis and the geological setting of the site are described. Six petro-fabric groups were defined. The main petro-fabric to which most samples belong is related to the local Senonian marl formations. Several variations of this fabric appear. The analysis of this limited assemblage tentatively indicates hardly any importation of vessels or commerce from outside the site, even from neighboring regions, such as the Upper Galilee. Further study is needed in order define the geographic provenance of the few outlying samples. Future publications will discuss the nearly additional 200 Middle Bronze Age vessels from Kabri analyzed by thin-section petrography.
