Abstract

The usefulness of a backspace character in various applications of Infor- mation Retrieval Systems is investigated. While not being a character in the initial sense of the word, a backspace can be defined as being a part of an extended alphabet, thereby enabling the enhancement of various algorithms related to the processing of queries in Information retrieval. We bring examples of three different application areas.
