N2 - The experience of ‘coming out of the closet’ differs among LGBTQ+ individuals, shaped by personal, social, and cultural factors. For those who embark on this process, it is not merely a singular reflective moment but an ongoing journey of self-discovery and authentic expression to oneself and others. This study employs textual analysis to present thirteen Jewish prayers for coming out at different steps of this complicated personal process, based on diverse life circumstances, such as a prayer after a painful coming out or a prayer after a loved one comes out as transgender. Each of the prayers reveals different aspects of the understanding of the disclosure and concealment of LGBTQ+ identity. By analyzing these innovative contemporary prayers, I examine how the liturgical textual platform affirms and expresses various characteristics of this process. I argue that coming out of the closet is affirmed by biblical scriptures and narratives and is even suggested as nothing less than a genuine religious commandment. The texts reflect the pursuit of truth, on behalf of the divine law, acknowledging non-heteronormative gender and sexual identities as divinely created, an integral part of Jewish historical tradition and contemporary sanctuary. Thus, I view these egalitarian prayers as powerful political tools for embracing and understanding diverse LGBTQ+ life experiences, particularly in religious sites.
