Abstract

The demand for greater transmission rates in wireless communication systems has grown exponentially with the proliferation of smart phones and tablet computers. Greater use of spectral resources by cellular systems is the only way to provide high data rate access in mobile and outdoor environments. One possible heir to the dominant 4G Cyclic Prefix Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (CP-OFDM), which offers superior spectral properties is the Filter Bank Multi-Carrier (FBMC). In this paper, we provide an overview of the system structure. We then engage in a simulation based comparative performance evaluation of FBMC to OFDM emphasizing those features which impact communication networks, including: BER and Capacity under Fading, Propagation of millimeter waves and MIMO transmission modes. We further evaluate the impact of adjacent channel interference by signal to interference ratio in the radio spectrum and propose a strategy to minimize it. In conclusion, we provide a list of references with an in-depth coverage of the application at hand.
