Abstract
In this paper we describe the design and implementation of a preliminary (MARK I) version of an expert system, employed in numbering the nodes of a finite element mesh in such a way as to minimize the average bandwidth of the stiffness matrix. The numbering procedure is heuristic and is designed to mimic the methods of a human expert numberer. We demonstrate the performance of the expert system by means of a two-dimensional example.
