N2 - Interactive broadband Internet access applications require coverage and high data rates at a low cost. There is an opportunity for the satellite communications system to become a key player in the broadband access system industry if it offers these features. A new DVB standard has been developed for the Return Link, called DVB-RCS. This paper explains how the broadband access communication system could possibly benefit from DVB-RCS, while outlining the standard's principles. The paper will also discuss potential drawbacks to the standard, including complexity, incompatibility and lack of strong backers.
