Abstract

Aminoglycosides are the most widely used antibiotics in the neonatal intensive care unit for the treatment of Gram-negative septicemia, meningitis, and necrotizing enterocolitis. Later in infancy and childhood, they are used to treat the bacteremia-septicemia of the immunosuppressed and Gram-negative infections complicating cystic fibrosis. The use of vancomycin as an antistaphylococcal agent has emerged recently parallel to the development of staphylococcal resistance against the penicillins.
