Abstract

Crack arrest fail-safe structure is a structure designed and fabricated such that unstable rapid propagation will be stopped within a continuous area of the structure prior to complete failure. This work presents a fail-safe crack arrest concept for bonded joints in order to ensure predictable and slow damage growth. The designed damage arrest concept performance was numerically evaluated and successful verified experimentally. Controlled damage growth was demonstrated, validating numerical predictive capabilities.
