Abstract

The paper demonstrates that Rayleigh and Marangoni numbers featuring instabilities occurring in liquid layers deposited on solid substrates and exerted to temperature gradients are sensitive to the thickness of the substrate. The dependence on the substrate thickness is different for Rayleigh and Marangoni numbers; thus experimental distinction between these kinds of instabilities becomes possible.
