N2 - The properties of least-square filters make them suitable for adaptive filtering in data communication systems. A Viterbi algorithm type of adaptive receiver is directly derived from the optimal receiver for an additive coloured Gaussian noise channel. It makes use of least-square filters to perform equalisation and noise cancellation and converges very quickly to the optimal receiver. The receiver adapts rapidly to changes in the impulse response of the channel or in the statistics of the noise.
