Abstract

Aromatic hydrocarbons affect the environment, and in particular the fauna and flora. Organic solvents are among the most toxic chemicals. Biodegradation of these molecules has been found under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions. Bacteria utilize these compounds as an energy and carbon source. Microorganisms have evolved various biochemical and physiological adaptation mechanisms which protect them from the lethal effects of organic solvents. The adaptation mechanisms include: alteration of the properties of the bacterial cell membrane, morphological and bacterial proteome changes.
