A cross-cultural perspective of mentoring in nursing in Israel

Abstract

Mentoring is widely recognized as a mechanism for providing nurses with workplace learning opportunities throughout their careers, whether in the form of pre-registration nurse education, leadership, staff development, or clinical supervision. The role of a mentor is to provide daily guidance to their mentee and to support them in the development of their nursing skills. Mentoring in nursing started to develop a few decades ago and is anchored in practice in several countries. Mentoring in nursing practice in Israel is rising, but several obstacles are still present. To understand the subject of mentoring in nursing in Israel-we turned to four key figures in nursing practice, management, and academia. In-depth interviews managed to raise issues related to the definition of mentoring, the figure of a "good mentor, " the cultural diversity that needs to be considered. Moreover, practical tips for promoting the mentoring in nursing emerged.
