Abstract

This study examined the contribution of the final project, taught in the fourth and final year of a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, focusing on its impact on the perception of professional competence, improvement of professional practices, and integration into the professional activities. The purpose of the study was to identify the main factors that influence the effectiveness of the final project that incorporates experience and to examine changes in users 'perceptions over three academic years (2025-2023), including an evaluation of a "Project incorporating experience". The study was based on a mixed methods approach that included the collection of quantitative and qualitative data. The study involved 181 students who completed their final project in the management track at the Department of Civil Engineering participated in the study: 59 in 2023, 61 in ,2024 and 61 in 2025. The data was collected through online questionnaires and further analyzed. The study included measurements at three time points to examine changes overtime. Perception of the project's contribution to professional training throughout the study period (%83 in ,2023 %84 in 2024 and 2025) was found to be stable. A continuing trend of preference for construction projects was discovered (%81in ,2023 %90 in ,2024 and %95 in 2025). A significant finding is that although only a low percentage (up to %25) of all respondents participated in the" Project incorporating experience", approximately %87 of them indicated that they see importance and contribution in doing the final project in a frame of an active project on construction site. The factors that have the highest impact on the project are: presence on the construction site (%5.93), quality of professional content and suitability to industry needs. The study indicates the effectiveness and ongoing contribution of the final project from the internship phase as a tool for professional development, with great potential for expanding the internship project. The findings emphasize the importance of incorporating practical experience as an integral part of the training of engineers in the field of construction management, along with creating supporting mechanisms for the application of the material learned in the field. Therefore, a significant expansion of the "Project incorporating experience" initiative and strengthening the partnership with industry are recommended.
