Abstract

This article deals with the unique method of biblical interpretation employed by artist Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669). Among the many paintings of the seventeenth century Dutch artist, about one third had Jewish or biblical themes.Te article indicates several possible approaches available to painters of biblical subjects, where the illustration is the most conspicuous. In contrast, Rembrandt chose a different unique approach to the bible. He painted as an interpreter of the bible, rather than as an illustrator who produces an artistic decoration, as many before and after him.Rembrandt is the deepest and closest painter to the Jewish interpretation of the Bible of all those who addressed this subject, particularly considering that the was not part of the Jewish people. He gave these stories a visual angle, using unique techniques that constitute an interpretive, humanistic, and spiritual interpretation, and described the biblical characters as human characters,“flesh and blood”, who managed to arouse the viewers’ emotions. His works were created from a position of deep and clear identification with the content of the Bible, rather than as a pre-figuration of the New Testament, as customary among the Christians, so much so that he even depicted himself and his family as biblical characters.
