Abstract

People coping with mental disorders and their families suffer greatly from negative stigmas due to their illness. These are also common among nursing students. It is important to identify what stigmas regarding mental disorders are common among nursing students, as future caregivers. This study was sigsned to explore the nursing student experience with people coping with mental disorders and expression of interest in working as a nurse in mental health. The study is a two-stage qualitative phenomenological study. At the first stage, nursing students volunteered to write about their experience in mental health clinical training. At the second stage, four female students were asked to tell whether they were interested in working in the field of mental health and what they thought about this field of work. Three main themes emerged from our results: danger, a feeling of inability among the students to maintain effective communication with patients and a lack of interest in the field of mental health care. Accordingly, the recommendations are to build educational interventions within the community, while sharing with student stories of people coping with mental disorders, as well as establishing relationships and providing an open and objective discussion on mental health stigmas, knowledge and understanding of mental disorders in theoretical learning and clinical experiences, based on an objective׳s information and pedagogical rationalization mechanism. Creating a theoretical and experiential learning environment will allow discourse on students׳ thoughts and opinions towards mental disorders prior to and during clinical experiences.
