Abstract
המאמר מראה כיצד חז"ל, המנהיגים המוכתרים מכורח הנסיבות של חורבן מדיני שהביא לחיסול ההנהגה המדינית, נוטלים על שכמם להמיר את האתוס האופנסיבי באתוס דפנסיבי, כחלק ממגמה זו ראו הם להמיר את התחושות הלאומיות-מדיניות-מכניות בתחושות דתיות תורניות קוגניטיביות. הם יצקו משמעות חדשה למושג חירות ומעתה משמעותה הוא הירא תודעתית-דתית ולא לאומית-מדינית, ש'אין לך בן חורין אלא מי שמתעסק בתורה' (מתוך האמר)
