Abstract

This study focuses on Holocaust Remembrance Day, which commemorates the murder of six million Jews during World War II. The research examines the causes of the weakening of memory in Israeli public connection and the attempts to address strengthening this memory. The study is qualitative research, based on primary sources, research literature, documents, press clippings and internet articles, surveys and personal interviews with figures who were involved in attempts to strengthen Holocaust memory in Jewish and Israeli public discourse. The research findings reveal that the factor of time constitutes one of the significant causes for the weakening of Holocaust memory: witnesses are diminishing, the uniqueness of the Holocaust event is fading in light of difficult events in the world, and more. This is in contrast to memorial days that originate from Jewish tradition, which withstand the test of public-conscious time. The research further reveals that in order to address strengthening memory, over the years attempts were made to integrate texts into synagogues. These attempts failed. The research sheds light on the future of memory in educational systems as an active experience that perpetuates memory over time. It is possible to examine ways to strengthen national memorial days, such as: designing experiential memory by enhancing students' activeness as citizens.
