Abstract

News reports that Shia La Beouf, an American actor and director was raped by a woman who visited at his art project, evoked many negative responses among online readers. The current research presents the analysis of online comments (talkbacks) to identify the patterns of blaming in the case of female-on-male rape. Using inductive thematic analysis, two themes were generated: victim-blaming and rejection of the rape story. "victim-blaming" addressed comments on characterological and behavioral blaming, while"rejection of rape story" referred to the comments that denied the rape and claims that defining what happened to La Beouf as rape, is a trivialization ofrape as a concept. In addition to these differences in themes' content, the analysis indicates that they differ in the level of the discussion. The comments with in the "victim-blaming" theme were very specific to La Beouf's case, while many of the comments within"the rejection of rape story" theme addressed rape of female-on-male rape on a general level. Furthermore, the findings show that blaming toward a victim of female-on-male rape is characterized by the focus on an issue related to gender and represents the traditional perception of such concepts as "a real man", "a real rape" and "a real victim". The discussion addresses blaming patterns in the context of traditional views on gender roles and emphasizes the importance of education and training to the prevention of victim-blaming
