Research interests

  • Interfaces between surfaces of artificial materials and biological systems (blood, lipids). Biosurfaces, biointerfaces. (Bio)surface analysis, material hemocompatibility.
  • Biosensing. Surface acoustic sensing (quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation, QCMD).
  • Platelets (thrombocytes). Their role in blood-biomaterial interactions and material hemocompatibility, activation and secretion at biomaterial interfaces. Development of whole-blood platelet activation and platelet-leukocyte interaction assays.
  • Studies of lipid- and cell membrane models, in particular pertaining to aminophospholipid asymmetry and blood coagulation. Lipid biophysics.
  • Surface analytical and biophysical techniques: Atomic force microscopy (AFM) of biological systems in liquids; Quartz Crystal Microbalance with dissipation (QCMD); Neutron reflectometry; Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS) of biological systems (lipids, platelets, blood preparations). Flow cytometry, ELISA, confocal fluorescence microscopy.
