Studying design problem soalving through the theory of meaning

The chapter presents a novel approach to design problem solving based on the meaning system. An introduction to problem solving, and design problem solving in particular, is followed by the description of main constructs of meaning corresponding to the theory of meaning by Kreitler and Kreitler. The function of meaning processes in regard to cognition and personality are reported. In the second part, several studies carried out in the framework of the meaning system about problem solving and design problem solving are reviewed. A meaning-based model for problem solving, with a special emphasis on design is presented. The model is designed to promote structuring a systematic syllabus for teaching and training problem solving in design.
