N2 - Node-and-wire visual programming languages (VPLs) have become central instruments of computational design in architecture, yet they are still frequently framed as usability layers that make programming accessible to non-programmers. This paper argues that their historical significance is not primarily pedagogical. Rather, VPL interfaces reorganize architectural work by externalizing dependencies, constraints, and change propagation as explicit, inspectable design structures within everyday software environments. Using a historical-comparative approach grounded in primary sources and digital archaeology, the paper reconstructs a genealogy of diagrammatic, dataflow, and constraint-based systems from early interactive graphics to contemporary architectural toolchains. The paper makes two contributions. First, it establishes a periodized timeline explaining how node-and-wire interfaces became available to architectural practice. Second, it positions VPLs as interfaces through which relational and parametric design ideas can be implemented, tested, revised, and reused in practice.
