Introduction: Nursing students are required to absorb theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and to translate the integration of these into decision-making in clinical settings. Conventional teaching methods of today include lectures, discussions, simulations on mannequins, and clinical experiences. Recently, virtual reality technology has been integrated as a teaching tool in the nursing profession. Objective: To compare two training methods -- traditional learning and learning through virtual reality - by their effectiveness in transmitting to nursing students theoretical knowledge and practical skills, and developing higher order thinking among the students.Method: 14 recent publications with varied levels of scientific credibility were reviewed, including meta-analyses, systematic reviews, randomized intervention studies, and quasi-experimental studies.Results: Virtual reality was found to be effective in acquiring and retaining knowledge, learning practical skills, and developing higher order thinking, although the research evidence is still not sufficiently strong. Additionally, the technology arouses interest, encourages active learning, and increases motivation.Conclusions: The integration of virtual reality technologies in nursing education is perceived as promising, despite the scarcity of unequivocal empirical evidence regarding its effectiveness. The current review, based on recent survey articles, provides a comprehensive and highly valid perspective on the subject, despite the methodological challenges present in this field of research.
